Alison Bickmore | The Work
Statement
Exploring the way the mundane becomes important the moment we direct attention towards it, Alison Bickmore is interested in the objects and places that are often conveyed in modern culture as worthless and ordinary. Through photography and print, Bickmore reveals her selected objects as part of the fantasy of the forgotten form, aiming to blur the boundary between concrete and illusion, presence and absence. The work presents a distant world that was discarded and withdrawn.
The collection of objects in the series “Grandfathers Shavers Box” are photographed and displayed to revive and record their significance as an object forming an emotive substitute for the person they represent in a systematic process associated with obsession and archival.
The screen prints are part of a series of work that originated from photographs of bungalows “Pagham Beach Bungalows” on a beach in West Sussex, incognisant dwellings occupied by weekend visitors to an eroding landscape.
