Caroline Kha | The Work

Statement

Caroline Kha studied Fine Arts at the National Art School in Sydney, majoring in Painting and Photography.  She was awarded an artist residency at the Florence Trust in 2009 and currently works in London.

Caroline Kha's recent work explores ideas about cultural memory, place and identity.  Her painting and collages examines romanticisation of travel and cultures. She is interested in the relationship and dialogue between traditional oil painting techniques and photography. Postcards and found imagery are a rich source material for her work.  Caroline Kha ’s paintings are emotive and evocative of familiar places. Her collages are multi-layered with images of idyllic places and cultures subtly juxtaposed to create new meaning.

Kha has been involved in extensive community projects and publications.  Her work has been exhibited and found in private collections in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, China and the United Kingdom.

“... on our return from a place, perhaps the first thing to disappear from memory is just how much of the past we spent dwelling on what was to come; how much of it, that is, we spent somewhere other than where we were.  There is a purity both in the remembered and in the anticipated visions of a place; it is the place itself that is allowed to stand out."  - The Art of Travel, Alain de Botten, p.23
