Chris Golle | The Work

Statement

Chris Golle’s work aims to distort the boundary between physical and internal spaces, and explore issues of artifice, illusion and imagination. He presents everyday scenes gone slightly askew, hovering somewhere between reality and fantasy, and where a strange familiarity and quiet stillness combine to produce a sense of the uncanny.

There is a strong filmic quality to Chris Golle’s paintings, which often resemble film stills isolated from a wider narrative, or theatre stages in which action has or may yet take place. Drawing inspiration from directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch, alongside painters such as Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, Golle aims to convey surreal notions of the subconscious and the metaphysical through a film noir lens. He gradually builds the composition of the painting in a way that a director might compose the Mise-en-Scene of a production, with deep staging and dramatic lighting and shadow to create tension and draw the viewer into these mysterious, ephemeral spaces.
