Damilola Oshilaja | The Work

Statement

The atom and light is the central focus of investigation within Damilola Oshilaja’s practice.

From this standpoint he is concerned with the Nano-object, its movement and

its formations. The perception of light, the formations of different matter, the

transitions of gases, and the inter-relational interactions of these elements are of

core concerns. At this moment, the focus is on terrestrial landscape (the natural

world and the man-made world) and life within the landscape. Human

interaction with environment, and the human condition plays a significant

role in this concern.

Beyond the natural disposition to the art form of painting, Damilola Oshilaja is interested in

the engineering of a new vision of painting in the 21st century. His interests

which include the sciences, philosophy, mathematics, history, language, and

politics lends itself well, to a transfiguration expressed through painting. He

believes in the multi-dimensional aesthetic of painting, and according to his

research, he believes there are still great lengths to go.

Oshilaja’s art practice is called Grunge Studios. Arte Grunge™ is 'un art autre' and

embodies gestural principles of painting in a synthesis of iconography, as well as

sculpture in two and three dimensions. The predominant impetus is the

liberation of imagination from a sedentary existence – it is an art form that

centres on the observation of, and interaction between form, the void, and the

landscape. Grunge Arte embraces a trust in flowing paint, intuitive lines,

spontaneous and directed gesture, and raw aesthetic symbols and materials.
