Daniel O'Sullivan | The Work
Statement
Daniel O’Sullivan was born in Croydon in 1977 and graduated from Winchester School of Art in the year 2000 with a BA in Fine Art - Painting. His current practice explores the metamorphosis, abstraction and transmutation of the everyday. The foundation of which is embedded in drawing and mark making. His work encapsulates a D.I.Y. work ethic and an interest in the amalgamation of the hand made and traditional with 21st Century technologies.
The inception of his paintings and drawings is usually born from the music he is listening to throughout the process. Attempting to translate the ethereal sounds emanating from his stereo, there is also a desire in his work to escape the bombardment of the worldly ills that surround us. Occasionally contradicting this logic, his work embraces some of the apocalyptic dys’topian imagery dredged from society’s anguish.
The photographic images used within his drawings are either taken by the artist himself, a collaborator or appropriated from the internet, newspapers and television which in turn leads us to question the true authorship of the work. They are then manipulated using gestural energetic and forceful marks in order to enhance, surrealise and occasionally completely change the aesthetic and conceptual nature of the original image.
O’Sullivan is a London based artist and had his first Solo Show in 2009 at the Amuti Gallery, London, and has shown work alongside artists including Billy Childish, James Cauty & Jamie Reid.
