Derek Gillingham | The Work
Statement
Derek Gillingham was born in Vancouver, Canada. He studied Classical Drawing and Painting at OCAD University during the late 1970’s and has worked in the film industry as a texture painter at notable effects shops such as Industrial Light and Magic, Sony Imageworks and most recently, Double Negative in London. During this time he has continuously practiced his own artwork, finding a balance between the collaborative world of film effects and that of the individual.
His influences are wide...from The Canadian Group of Seven, Wassily Kandinsky, Egon Schiele, Lucien Freud to the early Psychedelic Posters of Haight Ashbury. His work is also heavily driven by music with rhythm and sound playing a major part in the creative process.
