FLORIN UNGUREANU | THE WORK
STATEMENT
Florin Ungureanu (born 1971, Iasi) is a Romanian artist who lives and works in London since 2003. He graduated with a MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, University of London in 2008, previously having obtained a BFA (Hons) in Fine Art / Painting in 1997 from The George Enescu University of Arts, Iasi, Romania.
Ungureanu's work explores the concepts of power, politics, history, identity and death through irony and humour. He is interested in how they influence beliefs and perceptions by altering and subverting them. From here derives the desire to further explore the need for uncertainty and the metaphysical loneliness of the human being, addressing such issues as solitude, amnesia, memory, suppression, doubt and the sublime.
Ungureanu's work has been chosen by Rebecca Wilson from Saatchi Gallery for Zoo Art Fair 2007 at the Royal Academy of Arts London. Ungureanu has also shown work with Matt Roberts Arts at Salon '08 in Vyner Street London E2, and has been selected for the Summer Exhibition 2008 at Royal Academy of Arts London by Humphrey Ocean RA. In 2009 Ungureanu's work was included on the Curated Selection on Axis by Mona Casey. One of Ungureanu's paintings has recently been selected for East Wing Nine: EXHIBITIONISM, The Art of Display, at The Courtauld Institute of Art, Somerset House, London WC2R ORN, January 2010 to July 2011.
