KERRY ROYLE | THE WORK
STATEMENT
Kerry’s work is based on locations. She investigates living environments such as forests, lakes, mountains and their organisms as well as mankind's architecture and historic lifestyles through studies of cities from around the world. Kerry’s strong desire to travel and explore has led to her fascination with different environments and cultures carefully observing her surroundings.
Growing up surrounded by wilderness ignited a love for the environment that has broadened into the production of an array of cultural and nature themed works such as the study of endangered species (Oxygastra Curtisii) or modern cities (Yonge Street and Modern Madonna and Child). Kerry’s work recreates the subject’s beauty and aura while often depicting a sense of vulnerability through imperfections and weaknesses. In ‘White Pine’ for instance an organic quality embodies the natural rhythms and movements of the forest yet beyond the strength of the stone lies fragility in the extending roots and branches that could easily break and crumble as a tree could in reality. Environmental issues and sustainability are a great concern to Kerry and are a dominant theme in her work.
