Malika Sqalli | The Work
Statement
Malika Sqalli is an artist of Austrian and Moroccan descent, who’s practice lies between photography, moving image and poetry.
Presenting an investigation into the perception and questioning relationship between the self, the body and the surrounding world she has always been interested in exploring the convergence of science, technology and personal mythology - often asking questions, in words and in images.
Sqalli is walking on a line, a bridge and weave with topical threads, using various tools and finding inspirations in many opposing corners, linking words , ideas and patterns, like hyperlinks, trying to catch a glimpse in the slit between.
She sees her work situated between reality and virtual - where the two are embedded and entwined – a way to make sense of lines, words, numbers, juxtaposition of concepts, precepts and ideas, mismatched pairing.
Born in Rabat nearly 34 years ago Malika Squali is currently on a journey across Latitude 34, documenting and creating along the way - taking, tracing making a "line" of photographs.
"Cultures are maps of meanings through which the world is made intelligible." -- P.Jackson.
