Rohan Samuel | The Work
Statement
Through the process of painting Rohan manages to isolate visual aspects that he uses in his process-based photography and from memory. Images and presences that is apart of our everyday life that is aesthetically interesting. His paintings reflect this imagery in abstract forms based around his fascination of colours and textures. Utilising these aspect in order to create abstract paintings that is both aesthetically appealing and visually inviting. There is an irony about Rohan’ sculptural works. Very much in tune with colours and textures Rohan still refers to them as paintings because of the medium being mainly paint, with more of an emphasis on the textural but allowing the meanings of the colours themselves to be expressed more freely. Oscillating between the two Pohan produces a pungent atmosphere shrouded in the beauty of colour and the inviting demeanour of texture that is ever present and dominant in his works that is both encapsulating and striking.
