RORO CHARNEL | THE WORK
STATEMENT
To be able to precisely make reality of mental pictures with the only means of one single camera is a skill that London-based photographer Roro Charnel indeed masters.
Roro Charnel's work consist of a wide combination of nudity, humour, detailed studies of surroundings and personal portraits that provoke and leave the viewer in a rather confused state of mind. Trash and glamour are joined in beautiful photography with fragments of Roro Charnel's personal reflections and experiences.
He describes his own work as a mix of personal research, everyday observations and commissioned shoots. However, whatever is subject to Roro Charnel's camera – a portrait of a stranger as well as a friend, a Polaroid camera performing sexual acts on another Polaroid camera, or funny pictures of himself naked – there is always an underlying thought behind his photography work.
As Roro Charnel is a man that contradicts himself; on the surface he appears to walk around with an "I-don't-give-a-fuck-attitude," most of his work is in fact very much thought through. Everything from composition to light is carefully planned, something that makes Roro Charnel's photography so typical for him – even if a subject appears to be joke that is a product of a moment – the journey from thought to reality is often a precise creation of his inner vision.
Even his chosen name reflects a funny, trashy but classy identity that surrounds the photography of Roro Charnel. His work is fashion without trends, sex without porn and beautiful details in everyday life that to most of us, until now, have been hidden and unnoticed – Roro Charnel captures the beauty of nature in an urban environment as well as funny details in serious settings.
