Susana Lopez Fernandez | The Work
Statement
Susana López F. is a visual artist from Gijón, Spain. She holds a Bachelor´s Degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Painting from Barcelona University, from where she also holds a PhD. She focuses mainly on photography and mixed media, where the subjects of her work are taken from and inspired by her personal experiences in daily life. She seeks to reveal this with a distance which reflects an objective and striking honesty. A constant feature in her work is the use of social network to diffuse her projects.
Her work has previously been exhibited in galleries, town halls, cultural associations, and collective and individual exhibitions in Spain, Hong Kong and London. In her solo exhibition SinPrisas, where part was developed on twitter, she imagined a mass consumer society which provided a space to fit 140 characters. She envisions a society that constantly forgets because of it’s hurried and hectic circumstances. A society which diluted by the conviction that perpetual motion is the only thing that keeps us away from death.
Some of her past projects include: 20 years later, where the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall was deeply explored and celebrated. Another project she participated in was, LASTCALL, which showed many hours spent at Airports, which you can follow online.
In her most recent project entitled, Chopsticks (October 2012), where she uses Chinese images to help demonstrate the various reasons surrounding the sensitive issue of forced immigration in the East. She further explores the issue of attempting to survive in a new country and the conflict one endures while attempting to adapt to a new culture while simultaneously preserving one’s own roots and native cultural tendencies.
